Jackalope Presents and Bear Tooth Theatrepub are excited to bring a winter comedy series to Anchorage!

A new comedian will be featured monthly at the Bear Tooth November through March. Come on down and shake off the seasonal depression with some much needed laughs.

Doug Stanhope, a comedian born in Worcester, Massachusetts, is known for his unflinchingly honest, dark, and contrarian comedy. Influenced by "tasteless cartoons" from his youth, the high school dropout first tried acting in LA before moving to Las Vegas and starting stand-up in 1990. His material is marked by an almost brutal sincerity, covering his own drug and sexual habits, along with deeply held, unorthodox social and political views. Stanhope's uncompromising belief in what he says often induces visceral audience reactions and walkouts, leading to comparisons with Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce. Despite frustrations with network censors during his 2001 Comedy Central Presents special, Stanhope's career highlights include being named a Top Ten Comic To Watch by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter in 2002, and winning the Strathmore Press Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Frustrated by the constraints of traditional comedy, Stanhope has taken steps to control his career and environment. In 2005, he organized "The Unbookables," a collective of comics who refused to compromise their style, and in 2006, he even mounted a serious, though ultimately withdrawn, campaign for U.S. President as a Libertarian. He dislikes most comedy clubs, calling them "Adult Chuck E. Cheeses," and prefers performing in rock and roll venues. After moving from Los Angeles to the one-stoplight town of Bisbee, Arizona, in 2005 to escape crowds and traffic, he continued touring and released his special, "No Refunds," on Showtime in 2007.
